Keith will eat anything

There was an old US commercial which had the line "Give it to Mikey, Mikey will eat anything". I think sometimes I am like Mikey.

I have eaten this dish a couple of times. I believe It is made up of some type of flying ant and ant eggs. I found it a bit sour but once you get past the idea that you are eating insects it is pretty good.

I have put up this second picture of grasshoppers and I think silk worms after a comment to see if maybe Snap can tell me if what I ate was a silk.

  1. I had the advantage of not knowing what I was eating, until 2/3 of the way through the bowl of soupy ant eggs...didn't put me off, I quite enjoyed them. I haven't tried the actual ants though.

    1. I have read about the ant egg soup but don't think I have every seen it. I would be interested in hearing the story behind how you got it and who told you it was ant eggs. I am not sure this had ant eggs in it but it was my guess.

    2. I was invited to stay at a friend's house in a rural village between Chiang Rai and Mae Sai. She'd built a brand new house up there, but we dined with her aunty who made sure that she had a farang friendly dish available at dinner time...omelette :) But I enjoyed everything, including the ant egg soup. I think they thought I'd freak out when they told me what it was, but I kept on eating it. I actually felt bad, later while reflecting, I thought perhaps this had been a the highlight of dinner and I'd eaten most of it.

I bought deep friend bamboo worms from street sellers, as I was advised not to buy them from the supermarkets because you never know how fresh they are. If they're being sold in the streets/markets it means that they're in season and fresh.

    4. I assume you tried to put up a link and it did not work. You can email me if you like at biervoormij@gmail.com.

I put up the picture of what I think is a silkworm that I ate but maybe it was a bamboo worm. Is this what a bamboo worm looks like?

    5. No, didn't try to put up a link. I think bamboo worms are slightly thinner and longer than your worm...if you Google images for bamboo worms, you'll get a good idea of what they look like.

    6. I looked up the bamboo worms and agree it is not what I ate. Do you think the bamboo worms were worth looking for? I thought the grasshoppers were OK but just tasted like anything fried and was crunchy. I did not like the silk worms to mushy for me.

    1. It was not bad but not my favorite Thai dish but a lot better than fried silk worms.
