I made my way from Amnat Charoen driving across the providence of Yasothon and back into Roi Et to visit the Khmer ruin at Ku Ka Sing. I had added this site to my list of things to see after visiting the Khon Kean national museum and seeing this site in a video at the museum.
On arriving at the site there were a few Thai visitors doing paintings of the site and while I was looking around a lady came out and I assumed I was going to asked to buy a ticket. I was wrong, she was associated with the site but she just wanted to make sure I visited the small museum that was on site. This lady was very friendly spoke great English and was so so helpful. She informed me about 2 other Khmer ruins in the town and when I told her I was going to Yasothan for the Rocket Festival she told me Ku Ka Sing would be doing rockets this coming Monday. I asked her if there was a hotel in the town and she said it would be better to stay in Suwannaphum which I had passed through on the way to reach Ku Ka Sing. Suwannaphum is easy to remember since it is also the name of one of the airports in Bangkok.
I did a short video of Prasat Ku Ka Sing (Stone castle).
Ku Phon Rakhang (กู่โพนระฆัง) was one of the sites I learned about from the friendly lady in the museum.
The 3rd site in Ku Ka Sing was Ku Phon Wit (กู่โพนวิจ). It was just a bunch of stone blocks so was not overly impressed but since it was only about a block away from the other 2 sites, I was still happy with the visit.
When I was looking at the map to make sure I had the correct location of Suwannaphum in case I was going to try and stay there Monday a picture of Wat Ku Phra Kona popped up on google maps. It did not seem far out of my way so made a stop to check it out.
Just outside of the temple grounds there were a bunch of monkeys and a couple of ladies selling fruit and corn to feed to the monkeys. I did a short video of a few of the monkeys below. I don't like feeding the monkeys so talked to one of the ladies saying the monkeys are evil and I will not feed them. The lady kept saying no the monkeys are good and the food is only 10 baht (30 US cents). I gave her 10 baht and said for you not for the monkeys.
I noticed when she walked away, she had a sling shot for all the good monkeys.
I then headed back to the city of Yasothon to try and check in my hotel a day early and prepare myself for the Rocket Festival but more on that in the next blog.
