I was riding down the road in Yasothon and there were stands selling some sort of fruit. For some reason I decided to stop and try and ask the name of the fruit.
Turns out it was a type of Cantaloupe. The outside was whiter than what I think that a Cantaloupe looks like and they were smaller than I am use to seeing. My Thai is crap but thanks to google translate the lady understood I wanted to know the name. The name in Thai is close enough to Cantaloupe that I understood her.
This really nice lady went to a cooler and cut out a piece of Cantaloupe for me to taste and it was really good.
I asked her about another type of fruit she had that I also didn't know and she told me the name. I tried to make a note in my head to remember but knew that was a lost cause.
The Cantaloupe had to be for sale in 10 pound bags for 100 baht or around 3 US dollars. I tried to tell her I have a motorcycle so can not carry cantaloupe. I was about to ride away and thought I should give her something for her kindness. I handed her 20 baht and said thank you in Thai.
She decided I needed to take 2 cantaloupes. I said only 1 and once she agreed to only 1 I asked again her the name of the other fruit again. Oh you have to take one of these was what I guess is what her response was because she put one in a bag and handed to me. For a change I thought quick enough to say write and handed her my phone with the thai keyboard and her writing the name is the only reason I know the name is แตงไทยค่ะ.
This picture is a small piece of cantaloupe and the orange with white stripes Thai melon.
This is the Thai melon cut in half.
Not as sweet as the cantaloupe but really similar in taste.
A month later and I am in a local store and they had the type of cantaloupe I know next to the ones I saw in Yasothon. I thought I would add these pictures to show how they appear different.
This is the cantaloupe that I am familiar.
This is the type of cantaloupe I stopped to ask about in Yasothon.
