When I was at the Ku Ka Sing rocket festival there were a number of stands selling a fruit that I am not sure I have tried before. I asked how much and bought a bundle of the sticks with the fruit attached for 20 baht. I should have got the vendor to write down the name for me but I was more interested in tasting them so did not think of it at the time. It has mostly a sour taste with a little bit of sweetness.
I had a lot of fun asking everyone I talked to if they wanted some and gave most of the fruit away. I did finally ask someone the name and I think they said Ma Fai. I should have got them to write the name in Thai because I can't seem to find any fruit with that name.
I asked someone later the name after showing them the above pictures. They wrote down หมากค้อ or maak kor but when doing searches for that it leads to a brown type of fruit not the red skinned fruit I had bought.
The fruit reminded me of a small lychee and doing some more searches I came up with the name wild lychee. I found a link to the Bangkok post Mystery Fruit Unmasked. I think this is my fruit but the names in the piece do not match with either of the names I have been given.
I think I will stick with calling it a wild lychee even if the name is incorrect.
